McDonald’s Nutrition Calculator: Calories, Sugar & Sodium

Nobody walks into McDonald’s planning to eat 1,650 calories. But order the 40-piece Chicken McNuggets and that’s what lands on the tray — plus 3,400mg of sodium, which is more salt than the FDA’s entire daily limit of 2,300mg. Use the McDonald’s Nutrition Calculator below to build your exact order and watch calories, protein, sugar and sodium move in real time, before you ever reach the counter.

So what does this calculator actually do?

It holds all 225 items McDonald’s currently publishes, split across ten sections — McValue, Breakfast, Burgers, Chicken & Fish Sandwiches, McNuggets & McCrispy Strips, Fries & Sides, Happy Meal, Sweets & Treats, McCafé Coffees and Beverages. Pick what you’d actually order. The totals update as you go.

You get ten numbers per build: calories, protein, carbs, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, fiber and sugars. Most calculators stop at calories, which is the one number people already guess correctly. It’s sodium and sugar that catch them out, and those two sit right next to each other here so you can’t miss them.

How many calories are in a Big Mac meal?

A Big Mac with large fries and a large Coca-Cola comes to 1,440 calories. That’s 580 from the burger, 480 from the fries and 380 from the drink — roughly 72% of a 2,000-calorie day in one sitting.

The burger is the part everyone blames, and it’s the smallest problem. Swap the large Coke for unsweetened iced tea and you drop 380 calories and 100g of sugar without touching your food. Go from large fries to small and you save another 250. Same burger, same trip, 810 fewer calories. That’s the whole argument for building your order before you’re standing at the counter with three people behind you.

The sodium problem nobody mentions

The FDA puts the daily sodium limit at 2,300mg. Several single McDonald’s items get you most of the way there on their own.

A 40-piece McNuggets is a shareable item, so that 3,400mg figure spreads across a group. The one worth pausing on is the McCrispy: a single sandwich, 470 calories, and half your day’s sodium. Sauces add to it too — Spicy Buffalo is 520mg on its own, which is more than a small fries. If you’re watching blood pressure, the Chick-fil-A calculator makes a useful comparison, because the breaded-chicken category runs high across every chain.

Drinks are where the sugar hides

The American Heart Association recommends capping added sugar at 36g a day for men and 25g for women. A large Strawberry Shake contains 107g. A large Coca-Cola has 100g. A large Hi-C Orange Lavaburst, 104g.

That’s three to four days of sugar in one cup. And because it’s liquid, it doesn’t register as food — people order it alongside a full meal without counting it at all. Diet Coke and unsweetened iced tea both come in at zero calories and zero sugar, which makes this the single easiest swap on the entire menu. No compromise on the food, no change to the order, several hundred calories gone.

Breakfast is the biggest meal on the menu

People expect the burgers to be the heavy end. They aren’t. The Big Breakfast with Hotcakes is 1,340 calories and 2,070mg of sodium — more of both than a Big Mac and large fries combined.

Look at the sugar column. The Big Breakfast carries 56g, and that’s syrup and hotcake batter doing the work — nothing on that plate reads as sweet. Against it, the Egg McMuffin looks almost unremarkable, and that’s exactly the point. It’s the one breakfast item that doesn’t quietly cost you a third of your day before 10am.

Your coffee order might be dessert

McCafé is the section people forget to count. A large Caramel Frappe is 650 calories with 84g of sugar. A large Mocha Frappe is 660 calories and 81g. Those land in the same range as a milkshake, but nobody thinks of a coffee as dessert.

At the other end, a large McCafé Premium Roast Coffee is 10 calories and an Americano is 5. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive coffee on this menu is about 650 calories — a wider swing than anything in the burger section. If your daily coffee is a Frappe, that one habit is worth more than every food swap on this page put together.

If you’re chasing protein

McDonald’s does better on protein than its reputation suggests, as long as you know where to look.

The Egg McMuffin is the quiet winner here. 17g of protein for 310 calories beats the ratio on most items twice its size, and at 770mg sodium it’s mid-range rather than extreme. For a breakfast comparison across chains, the First Watch breakdown covers similar ground.

What about the Happy Meal?

Happy Meals land between 400 and 480 calories. The 4-piece McNuggets version is 400 calories and 510mg sodium, the 6-piece is 480 and 670mg, and the Hamburger Happy Meal is 480 and 680mg.

Those figures assume the standard sides. Swapping the drink or the side changes them, and Apple Slices at 15 calories are about as cheap an addition as exists on this menu. Worth testing in the calculator before you order rather than guessing at the counter.

Big Mac vs Whopper: the comparison neither chain will publish

This is the question people actually type into Google, and no restaurant is going to answer it honestly on its own website. Here’s the straight version.

The Whopper is the bigger burger by a clear margin — 130 calories more than a Big Mac, with 8g more fat. You get 9g more protein for that, so per calorie they land in similar territory, but in absolute terms a Whopper is the heavier order.

Add cheese and the gap widens. A Whopper with Cheese is 790 calories and 1,660mg of sodium — 270 calories and 520mg more than a Quarter Pounder with Cheese. The fries are closer than the burgers: a large McDonald’s fries is 480 calories and 400mg sodium, against 440 calories and 400mg for a large Burger King fries. Run both orders side by side with the Burger King nutrition calculator for the full build-by-build version.

Three swaps that actually move the numbers

  • Large soda → unsweetened iced tea. Saves 380 calories and 100g sugar. Costs you nothing.
  • Large fries → small fries. 480 calories down to 230, and sodium from 400mg to 190mg.
  • McCrispy → Filet-O-Fish. 470 calories and 1,140mg sodium becomes 380 calories and 580mg. You halve the salt.

None of these ask you to skip McDonald’s or order a salad. They’re the swaps people actually make. Run your own version through the calculator above and the difference shows up immediately — same as it does on the In-N-Out calculator.

How to use it in about thirty seconds

  1. Pick your section — burgers, breakfast, McCafé, whatever you’re actually ordering.
  2. Add every item, including the drink and the sauce. Sauces matter more than you’d think.
  3. Read the sodium and sugar rows, not just calories.
  4. Swap one item and watch what moves. That’s where the useful information is.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the McDonald’s Nutrition Calculator?

It’s a reliable planning guide rather than a lab measurement. The values come from McDonald’s official nutrition information as published through the Nutritionix Interactive Nutrition Menu that McDonald’s own website links to. McDonald’s notes that figures are based on standard product formulations and average supplier values, and that serving size, preparation, regional supply and seasonal differences all shift the numbers. Formulations also change periodically. Treat the total as a close estimate and check in-store for the most current figures.

Does McDonald’s have an official nutrition calculator?

McDonald’s publishes nutrition information on its own website and in its app. What this tool adds is a full multi-item build — burger, side, drink and sauce together — with combined totals across ten nutrients at once, including sodium and sugar side by side rather than buried in a table.

How many calories are in a Big Mac?

A Big Mac is 580 calories, with 25g protein, 34g fat, 45g carbs and 1,060mg sodium. Add a large fries and a large Coca-Cola and the meal reaches 1,440 calories.

What is the healthiest thing at McDonald’s?

It depends what you’re optimising for. For protein per calorie, the Egg McMuffin at 310 calories and 17g protein is the standout. For the lowest-calorie additions, Apple Slices are 15 calories and unsweetened iced tea, black coffee and Diet Coke are all effectively zero. If sodium is your concern, the Filet-O-Fish at 580mg is the mildest of the main sandwiches.

Which McDonald’s item has the most sodium?

The 40-piece Chicken McNuggets, at 3,400mg — roughly 148% of the FDA’s 2,300mg daily limit, though it’s designed to be shared. Among single-serve items the McCrispy leads at 1,140mg, followed by the Bacon Quarter Pounder with Cheese at 1,470mg for the full sandwich.

How much sugar is in a large McDonald’s drink?

A large Coca-Cola has 100g of sugar and a large Strawberry Shake has 107g. A large Caramel Frappe carries 84g. All of these exceed the American Heart Association’s daily added-sugar guidance of 36g for men and 25g for women, in some cases by three or four times.

Can I eat low-carb at McDonald’s?

Within limits. The calculator has a filter for high-protein builds, and burgers without the bun cut carbs sharply. A Quarter Pounder with Cheese is 520 calories with 30g protein before you remove anything. The harder problem is sodium rather than carbs — most low-carb builds here still run high on salt.

Build your order before you go

The point of the McDonald’s Nutrition Calculator isn’t to talk you out of the Big Mac — it’s to show you where the calories, sugar and sodium actually come from. Once you can see that the drink and the fries move the numbers more than the burger does, you can keep what you like and adjust only what matters. Scroll back up, build your exact order, and check the macros before your next visit.
