Highest-Protein Fast Food Under 600 Calories: 10 Chains Ranked

Chick-fil-A sells a 30 count of Grilled Nuggets. It carries 98g of protein in 510 calories.

That is roughly double what most people get from a whole day of meals, from one order that fits inside a 600 calorie budget. Nothing else at any of the ten chains we checked comes close.

We pulled every item from ten major chains and filtered to 600 calories or fewer with at least 20g of protein. That left 210 qualifying items. Here is what wins, and the sodium cost that comes with it.

The Short Answer

Most protein: Chick-fil-A 30 Count Grilled Nuggets. 98g of protein, 510 calories, 1,710mg sodium.

Best protein without the salt: Jersey Mike’s #6 Roast Beef & Provolone in a Tub. 52g of protein, 430 calories, and only 190mg of sodium. That is 8% of a day’s limit.

Most efficient per calorie: Chick-fil-A Grilled Nuggets, at 19.2g of protein per 100 calories.

WingstopNothing qualifies

Wingstop is not a typo. It has no item at all that delivers 20g of protein inside 600 calories. Its lowest-calorie high-protein option is 640 calories, and that one carries 3,940mg of sodium.

The Sodium Trap

Protein rankings alone are misleading. Most high-protein fast food arrives with a large amount of salt, and the spread between options is enormous.

Compare the top two items on the list. Chick-fil-A’s 30 count nuggets give you 98g of protein for 1,710mg of sodium. That is 57g of protein per 1,000mg of salt. Jersey Mike’s #6 Roast Beef in a Tub gives you 52g for 190mg. That is 274g per 1,000mg.

Jersey Mike’s is nearly five times more sodium-efficient. You get half the protein for one ninth of the salt.

The In a Tub Trick

Jersey Mike’s takes four of the top spots on both lists, and the reason is one ordering choice. Ask for any sub “in a tub” and they serve the fillings in a bowl without the bread.

The effect on sodium is dramatic. Look at the range inside a single chain:

  • #6 Roast Beef & Provolone in a Tub: 52g protein, 430 calories, 190mg sodium
  • #20 Pastrami & Swiss, wheat regular: 45g protein, 580 calories, 2,660mg sodium

Same chain. Similar protein. Fourteen times the sodium. The bread and the cured meat are doing all of it, and dropping the bread is free.

Protein Per 100 Calories

If your constraint is calories rather than salt, this is the ranking that matters.

ItemChainProtein / 100 cal
Grilled Nuggets (any count)Chick-fil-A19.2g
Grilled FiletChick-fil-A19.1g
Roasted ChickenSweetgreen19.1g
ChickenChipotle17.8g
Blackened ChickenSweetgreen15.0g

Grilled chicken dominates, which is not surprising. What is worth noting is how far ahead it sits. The best burger at McDonald’s or Burger King delivers about 6.5g per 100 calories, which we covered in our McDonald’s vs Burger King comparison. Grilled chicken is roughly three times more efficient.

The Chain That Cannot Do It

Wingstop deserves its own section, because it is the only chain here with nothing that qualifies.

Its wings do carry protein. Most flavours land around 33g to 34g. The problem is what they carry with it.

FlavourProteinCaloriesSodium% of daily limit
Cajun33g6403,940mg171%
Atomic33g6503,230mg140%
Hickory Smoked BBQ34g7302,680mg117%
Spicy Korean Q34g7202,570mg112%
Garlic Parmesan34g8902,060mg90%

Cajun wings carry 3,940mg of sodium. That is 171% of the FDA’s entire daily limit, from an order with less protein than a Jersey Mike’s tub that carries 190mg. The same protein is available elsewhere for one twentieth of the salt.

How to Order for Protein

  • Grilled beats crispy, every time. Chick-fil-A’s grilled nuggets hit 19.2g per 100 calories. Breading adds calories without protein.
  • Drop the bread when the chain lets you. Jersey Mike’s in a tub and In-N-Out protein style both cut calories and salt for free.
  • Buy protein separately where you can. Chipotle’s chicken on its own is 32g for 180 calories and 310mg. The rice, tortilla and sauces add the rest.
  • Avoid sauced wings if you are watching sodium. This is where the worst numbers in the whole dataset live.
