Zaxby’s Nutrition Calculator: Calories, Protein, Sodium & Macros
We’ve all been there, staring at the menu, feeling great about a “reasonable” chicken order, only to realize later that we’ve unknowingly inhaled an entire day’s worth of sodium and hidden calories. That trap is exactly why I built this calculator; it’s designed to bridge the gap between what you think you’re ordering and what you’re actually getting, including every single drop of that addictive Zax Sauce.
Zaxby’s official guides conveniently leave the sauce out of their finger counts, which feels like a setup when you’re at a restaurant built entirely around dipping. Use the calculator below to build your exact plate, sides, toasts, and every sauce included, so you can finally see the real numbers and make a choice that actually fits your goals instead of just guessing.
The short version
- The sauce isn’t in the number. Zaxby’s lists Fingerz without Zax Sauce. Add it yourself, every time.
- Sodium is the real issue. Finger plates and sandwiches run 1,500 to 2,900 mg (65 to 126% of your daily value).
- Even the “healthy” salad is salty. The Grilled House Zalad is a great 48g-protein order, with about 1,600 mg of sodium.
- Grilled beats fried by a mile, and it’s the one swap that changes everything.
What this calculator actually does
It totals calories, protein, carbs, fat and sodium for your full order, the Fingerz or wings, the Zalad, the sandwich, the crinkle fries, the Texas Toast, and crucially the sauces and dressings, which Zaxby’s lists separately.
That separation is the whole reason a calculator matters here. You can look up a Chicken Finger Plate and feel fine about it. Then you add a dip cup, a second dip cup because the first ran out, a Texas Toast, and a sweet tea, and you’ve built a meal that looks nothing like the number you checked.
The calculator puts it back together.
The Footnote that changes everything
Let’s be precise, because this is verifiable and it matters.
Zaxby’s official Nutrition and Allergen Guide carries this note: nutritional and allergen information for a la carte Chicken Fingerz does not include Zax Sauce, it directs you to the Sauces section separately.
Think about what that means. Zaxby’s is a sauce company that happens to sell chicken. The Zax Sauce is the reason people drive there. And the headline calorie number for Fingerz is calculated as if you’re eating them plain.
What a dip cup actually costs:
| Sauce (dip cup) | Approx. calories | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Zax Sauce® | ~120 to 180 | ~12 to 18g fat, ~480 mg sodium |
| Spicy Zax Sauce® | ~200 | The heaviest |
| Ranch | varies | Creamy, calorie-dense |
| Honey Mustard | lighter than Zax | |
| Vinaigrette | lightest | Best Zalad option |
Published figures vary a little across sources depending on cup size, which is exactly why you should check the calculator rather than trust a remembered number. But the direction is never in doubt: one dip cup can add more calories than a piece of chicken.
Two dip cups on a finger plate is not unusual. That’s potentially 300+ calories and nearly 1,000 mg of sodium in sauce alone.
The fix isn’t skipping the sauce. It’s ordering it on the side and counting it. Half a cup is still Zaxby’s. Two cups is a decision.

How to use it in ten seconds
- Pick your main, Chicken Fingerz, Traditional or Boneless Wings, a Zalad, or a sandwich.
- Grilled or fried? This is your biggest single decision.
- Add your sides, crinkle fries, Texas Toast, coleslaw.
- Add every sauce and dressing. Yes, all of them. That’s the point.
Then run the experiment: take your usual order, remove one dip cup and the Texas Toast, and look at what happens to sodium. It’s the fastest 700-calorie, 1,000-milligram lesson you’ll get.
Sodium is the story at Zaxby’s
Chicken gets brined. Breading gets seasoned. Sauces get salted. It all stacks.
Most sandwich and finger plate meals land between 1,500 and 2,900 mg of sodium, that’s 65% to 126% of the FDA’s 2,300 mg daily value, in one meal. The American Heart Association’s ideal daily target is closer to 1,500 mg, which a single Zaxby’s meal can exceed on its own.
And here’s the part that catches people out:
The Grilled House Zalad, the healthy order, carries roughly 1,600 mg of sodium.
To be clear, it’s still a strong choice. Around 560 calories, 48g of protein, 5g of fiber. That protein number is excellent. But if you ordered the salad specifically to be virtuous about salt, you didn’t escape anything. You escaped the calories.
Calories and sodium are separate axes at Zaxby’s. Optimizing one does not fix the other.
What actually lowers sodium:
- Sauce on the side, and use half. ~480 mg per Zax Sauce cup.
- Grilled over fried, the breading carries seasoning.
- Skip the Texas Toast.
- Dressing on the side for Zalads.
- Water or unsweetened tea. (Even Diet Coke carries sodium, roughly 80 mg in a small, 160 mg in a large.)
The meals, honestly
| Item | Approx. calories | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Grilled House Zalad | ~560 | 48g protein, ~1,600 mg sodium |
| Chicken Finger Plate | ~1,110 to 1,570 | Depends on finger count |
| Big Zax Snak Meal | ~1,000 | ~36g protein, 48g fat |
| Grilled Chicken Sandwich | ~800 | ~38g protein |
| Fried Zalads | +~100 vs grilled | Same salad, different chicken |
| Crinkle Fries | ~400 to 500 | |
| Coleslaw | ~140 | Lightest side |
| Chicken Fingerz Zax Packz | ~3,970 | 20 fingers, fries, toast, sauce, for sharing |
A Zax Packz is not a meal. It’s a family platter approaching 4,000 calories. Listed here only so nobody’s surprised.
Grilled versus fried is the whole game
Swapping fried chicken for grilled on a Zalad saves you roughly 100 calories and a meaningful chunk of fat, but the bigger win is what it does to your ratios. The Grilled House Zalad at ~560 calories with 48g of protein is one of the better protein-per-calorie meals in Southern fast food.
The high-protein orders:
- Grilled House Zalad, ~48g protein
- Grilled Chicken Sandwich, ~38g protein
- Big Zax Snak Meal, ~36g protein
- Traditional Wings (unbreaded), protein-dense, low carb
- Zalad + extra grilled chicken, 30 to 40g range
If you’re at Zaxby’s for macros, the answer is almost always grilled chicken on a Zalad, dressing on the side.

Keto and low-carb at Zaxby’s
It’s workable, with limits.
Order: Traditional (bone-in, unbreaded) Wings, a Grilled House Zalad with no croutons, or a blackened/grilled chicken sandwich with no bun.
Sauce strategy: stick to vinegar-based and lighter options; skip honey-forward and sweet sauces. Zax Sauce is fat-heavy rather than sugar-heavy, so it fits keto better than it fits a calorie deficit, count it either way.
Skip: all breaded items (Fingerz and Boneless Wings are breaded), crinkle fries, Texas Toast, croutons, and regular soda or sweet tea.
Note that Boneless Wings are breaded chicken, not wings, same trap as at other chicken chains. Traditional wings are the low-carb ones.
Allergens, oil, and what Zaxby’s actually says
Zaxby’s is straightforward about this, and the details matter.
Menu items are prepared on shared equipment in a shared facility with items containing milk, eggs, wheat, soy, tree nuts and sesame. Suppliers may introduce trace allergens or change formulas without notice.
Zaxby’s fries in a blend of highly refined soybean oil, and notes that the FDA does not include this type of highly refined oil in its definition of a major food allergen. Worth knowing if you have a soy sensitivity, even though it’s technically exempt.
Sesame is now a major allergen. Under the FASTER Act, sesame became the ninth FDA-recognized major food allergen effective January 1, 2023, and it appears across Zaxby’s chicken products.
Zaxby’s has no certified gluten-free kitchen. Grilled chicken and traditional wings are among the items without gluten ingredients, but all breaded items contain wheat, and cross-contact is realistic.
Anyone with a serious allergy should consult the current allergen guide and talk to the store.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the Zaxby’s Nutrition Calculator?
It’s a good estimate, with a few honest caveats straight from Zaxby’s own guide. Values are rounded according to NLEA/FDA rounding regulations, which means the components of a meal may not sum exactly to the listed total. The guide excludes sauces from a la carte Fingerz, and excludes sides, drinks and treats bundled with Kidz Meals. Substitutions alter nutrition. Use the calculator as a close planning figure and check Zaxby’s official PDF for current values.
Does Zaxby’s publish official nutrition information?
Yes. Zaxby’s publishes a Nutrition and Allergen Guide as a downloadable PDF covering calories, fat, saturated and trans fat, sodium, carbs, fiber, sugar, protein and allergens. Sauces, dressings, sides and drinks are listed in separate sections, which is precisely why people underestimate their meals.
How many calories are in Zax Sauce?
Reported figures put a dip cup of Zax Sauce® at roughly 120 to 180 calories with 12 to 18g of fat and around 480 mg of sodium; Spicy Zax Sauce® runs higher, near 200. Because Zaxby’s lists sauce separately from a la carte Fingerz, that’s on top of the number you looked up. Order it on the side if you want to control the amount.
How much sodium is in a Zaxby’s meal?
A lot. Most sandwich and finger plate meals run 1,500 to 2,900 mg, 65% to 126% of the FDA’s daily value in one sitting. Even the Grilled House Zalad carries about 1,600 mg. Sauce on the side, grilled over fried, and skipping the Texas Toast are the most effective reductions.
What is the healthiest thing at Zaxby’s?
The Grilled House Zalad, at roughly 560 calories with about 48g of protein and 5g of fiber. Order it with grilled chicken, dressing on the side, no croutons and no fried toppings. It’s an excellent macro order, just don’t mistake it for a low-sodium one.
How many calories are in a Chicken Finger Plate?
Roughly 1,110 to 1,570 calories depending on how many Fingerz are on the plate, and that’s before you count the Zax Sauce, which Zaxby’s lists separately. Add a dip cup or two and you’re comfortably past 1,300.
Are Boneless Wings healthier than Traditional Wings?
Not in the way people assume. Boneless Wings are breaded chicken, so they carry more carbs than traditional bone-in wings, which are unbreaded. Calories per serving are broadly similar, but for low-carb or keto eating, traditional wings are clearly the better choice.
Is Zaxby’s gluten-free friendly?
No certified gluten-free options exist. Grilled chicken and traditional wings don’t contain gluten ingredients, but all breaded items contain wheat, and everything is prepared in a shared facility on shared equipment. Anyone with celiac disease should treat cross-contact as likely and speak with the restaurant.
Go build your order
Zaxby’s isn’t hiding anything, the numbers are all in the PDF. It’s just that the sauce, the side and the toast live in different sections, and almost nobody assembles them.
That’s the whole trick. Your Fingerz aren’t 380 calories. Your Fingerz plus the sauce you were always going to use are something else.
Scroll back up, build the order you actually place, dip cups and all. Then move the sauce to the side and look again.
