Denny’s Nutrition Calculator: Calories, Protein, Carbs & Sodium

We’ve all sat in a Denny’s booth, hungry and ready for comfort, only to realize later that one breakfast just hit our entire daily sodium limit. It’s frustrating when you’re trying to make healthier choices, but the menu makes it feel like you’re choosing between satisfaction and your well-being.

Use the Denny’s Nutrition Calculator below to build your exact plate, from your favorite Grand Slam to that burger, and finally see the true impact on your calories, protein, and sodium before you order. Let’s move past the guesswork so you can enjoy your meal without the hidden health cost, empowering you to make the right choice for your body every single time.

The short version

  • A normal-calorie breakfast with a full day’s salt. Grand Slam: ~740 cal, ~2,100 mg sodium.
  • Two bacon strips = 100 calories and 350 mg of sodium. Bacon is a salt decision here, not a calorie one.
  • Three easy swaps cut roughly 900 mg without changing your plate much.
  • Denny’s already built a calculator, it’s called Build Your Own Grand Slam.

Denny’s already made a calculator. It’s on the menu.

Most restaurants publish a PDF and hope you read it. Denny’s did something better without meaning to.

Build Your Own Grand Slam lets you choose any four items from a published list, bacon strips, sausage links, eggs (fried, scrambled, boiled, whites), hash browns, silver dollar pancakes, toast, turkey bacon, and Denny’s publishes the nutrition for every single component.

That’s a macro calculator with a griddle attached. You’re already assembling a meal from labelled parts. The only thing missing is the arithmetic, which is what the tool above does.

What this calculator actually does

It totals calories, protein, carbs, fat and sodium for your whole order, the four slam components, the extra side, the coffee, the pancake syrup.

Denny’s spans an unusual range: a 340-calorie Fit Fare skillet and a 1,320-calorie Grand Slamwich sit on the same laminated menu, at 3am, with no signal about which is which.

How to use it in ten seconds

  1. Pick your slam components, or your omelette, burger, or skillet.
  2. Choose your eggs. Whole, scrambled, or whites.
  3. Choose your meat. This is your sodium decision.
  4. Add sides and bread.

Then look at the sodium line before the calorie line. At a diner, that’s the only sensible way to read a menu.

The calories are fine. The sodium is the problem.

Let’s put the published figures side by side:

ItemCaloriesSodium% of daily value
Original Grand Slam~740~2,100 mg91%
Lumberjack Slam~1,190~1,820 mg79%
Moons Over My Hammy, ~2,240 mg97%
Grand Slamwich w/ hash browns~1,320~3,410 mg148%

Look at the top row. 740 calories is a normal breakfast. Two pancakes, two eggs, two bacon, two sausage, most people would call that a sensible plate.

It carries 91% of the FDA’s 2,300 mg daily sodium value. And the American Heart Association’s ideal target is 1,500 mg, which the Grand Slam clears by 40% before you’ve had lunch.

The Grand Slamwich is in another category entirely, 3,410 mg is nearly a day and a half of sodium in one sandwich. (It does deliver 52g of protein, to be fair.)

None of this is Denny’s being sneaky. It’s cured pork, seasoned potatoes and salted eggs, the entire architecture of American diner breakfast. It just means the calorie number is telling you almost nothing useful.

The bacon is a salt decision

Here’s the single most useful line in Denny’s whole nutrition guide.

Bacon Strips (2): 100 calories, 8g fat, and 350 mg of sodium.

One hundred calories. That’s nothing. You’d never think twice about it.

Three hundred and fifty milligrams of sodium, nearly a quarter of the AHA’s ideal daily intake, from two strips of bacon.

That reframes the whole plate. At Denny’s you are not choosing between bacon and a smaller waistline. You’re choosing between bacon and your sodium budget.

The three swaps that actually work:

  1. Skip the bacon, saves roughly 350 mg
  2. Ask for no added salt on the eggs
  3. Choose fresh fruit instead of hash browns

Together, those three changes cut around 900 mg of sodium, and you’re still eating pancakes, eggs and sausage. Nobody has taken your breakfast away.

Denny’s does some things genuinely well

It’s worth saying, because the sodium section is bleak.

Fit Fare® is a dedicated menu section reviewed by registered dietitians. The Fit Fare Veggie Skillet lands around 340 calories, one of the lowest-calorie full meals at any diner chain. Order it with egg whites and it drops further.

24/7 availability is a real nutritional feature, not a gimmick. If you finish a night shift at 2am and want a high-protein, low-carb meal, Denny’s is one of very few options in America that isn’t a drive-thru selling fried chicken.

The customization is unmatched. Build Your Own Slam and Build Your Own Omelette let you control the plate item by item, which is precisely what makes accurate tracking possible here.

And the allergen documentation is thorough, which genuinely helps families.

Keto at 2am

Denny’s is one of the best keto restaurants in America, and it’s open when nowhere else is.

Build your slam around: whole eggs, bacon, sausage links, ham, steak. Skip: pancakes, hash browns, toast, biscuits, syrup, and sweet glazes. Or: order any burger without the bun, or on a lettuce wrap.

Fat and protein are the whole architecture of a diner breakfast. Remove the pancakes and the potatoes and you’re left with a naturally ketogenic plate.

The sodium caveat still applies, and it applies more, because bacon, sausage and ham are exactly the items you’re leaning on. If you’re low-carb for blood pressure reasons rather than weight, check the sodium line carefully.

Vegan, vegetarian and the kids’ menu

Vegan at Denny’s is limited but workable. The Beyond Burger patty, on a lettuce wrap, or a bun without butter, plus hash browns, oatmeal made with water, and side vegetables. Ask specifically about the butter and the griddle.

Vegetarians have an easier time: eggs, pancakes, omelettes, veggie skillets.

On the kids’ menu, Denny’s does something almost no chain bothers with. Its nutrition guide publishes children’s calorie guidance directly: 1,200 to 1,400 calories a day for children ages 4 to 8, and 1,400 to 2,000 for ages 9 to 13. Most restaurants only print the adult 2,000-calorie line. If you’re feeding kids at a diner, that’s a genuinely useful reference, and worth noting that a Jr. Grand Slam is a meaningful share of a young child’s day.

Allergens and the fryer

Denny’s kitchens are not allergen-free.

An Original Grand Slam contains Wheat (pancakes), Milk (butter and batter), Egg, and Soy (sausage). No peanuts, tree nuts, fish or shellfish as primary ingredients, but cross-contact is possible, as it is in any fast-paced commercial kitchen.

Denny’s typically fries in soybean oil or a vegetable oil blend. Anyone with a severe peanut or tree nut allergy should speak to the restaurant manager before ordering rather than relying on a chart.

Tell your server. Denny’s documentation is good, but a printed guide can’t see the pan your food was cooked in.

What Denny’s says about its own numbers

Their disclosure is short and unusually plain.

Denny’s states its nutrition information is derived from vendor product data, and that the data represents an estimate of nutrient content. There may be variations in nutritional content across servings, based on variations in overall size and quantities of ingredients, and based upon special ordering.

That last phrase is the important one. The moment you customize, and Denny’s actively encourages you to customize, you’ve moved off the printed number. Which is the honest limitation of every nutrition calculator, including this one.

Denny’s also publishes a phone line (800-733-6697) for nutrition questions, and provides printed nutritional guides on request in most restaurants.

One caveat on the figures here. Denny’s nutrition guide is versioned and updated periodically, and published Grand Slam calorie counts vary between roughly 700 and 890 depending on your egg and meat choices and which edition you’re reading. Treat everything above as directional and check the current guide at dennys.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the Denny’s Nutrition Calculator?

It’s a close estimate. Denny’s states its data comes from vendor product data and represents an estimate of nutrient content, with variations across servings based on ingredient size and quantity, and based upon special ordering. Since Denny’s is built around customization, most orders drift from the standard figure. Use it as a reliable planning guide and check the current guide at dennys.com.

How many calories are in a Grand Slam?

Published figures range from about 700 to 890 calories depending on your egg and meat choices, with most sources landing near 740. The more important number is sodium: roughly 2,100 mg, or about 91% of the daily value.

Why is Denny’s so high in sodium?

Because diner breakfast is built from cured meats, seasoned potatoes and salted eggs. Two bacon strips alone carry 350 mg. Moons Over My Hammy reaches about 2,240 mg (97% DV), and the Grand Slamwich with hash browns hits roughly 3,410 mg, 148% of a full day in one dish.

How do I lower the sodium in my Denny’s order?

Three swaps: skip the bacon (about 350 mg), ask for no added salt on your eggs, and choose fresh fruit instead of hash browns. Together those cut roughly 900 mg while leaving most of your plate intact.

What is the healthiest thing at Denny’s?

The Fit Fare® Veggie Skillet at around 340 calories is among the lowest-calorie full meals on the menu, especially with egg whites. Fit Fare is a dedicated section reviewed by registered dietitians. A build-your-own plate of scrambled egg whites, fresh fruit and dry whole-wheat toast is another strong option.

Can I eat keto at Denny’s?

Yes, and it’s one of the best options in America for it, partly because it’s open 24/7. Build a slam from whole eggs, bacon, sausage, ham or steak; skip pancakes, hash browns, toast and syrup. Burgers can be ordered without the bun. Just watch the sodium, since the keto-friendly items are the salty ones.

Are there vegan options at Denny’s?

A few. The Beyond Burger patty on a lettuce wrap or a bun without butter, hash browns, oatmeal made with water, and side vegetables. Confirm the butter and griddle preparation with your server, since cross-contact is common.

Is Denny’s safe for food allergies?

Denny’s publishes thorough allergen documentation, but its kitchens are not allergen-free and cross-contact is possible. Frying is typically done in soybean oil or a vegetable oil blend. Anyone with a severe allergy should speak with the restaurant manager before ordering.

Go build your plate

Denny’s is a good diner doing exactly what a diner does. The Grand Slam is a fair amount of food for the money, the customization is genuinely best-in-class, and Fit Fare is a real menu, not a token gesture.

You just have to stop reading the calorie column. Two strips of bacon cost you 100 calories and a quarter of your sodium. That’s the number that runs this menu.

Scroll back up, build the plate you actually order. Then skip the bacon, hold the salt on the eggs, and look again.
